Santa
Barbara Infrareds new high temperature extended area blackbodies
incorporate the advantages of SBIRs breakthrough Smart Blackbody®
architecture into a system with a temperature range of 600°C.
The
design of the Smart Blackbody creates a system with inherently more stable
and accurate temperature control. Additionally, foolproof blackbody interchangeability,
high immunity to EMI, ease of calibration, and non-critical cabling all
make the Smart Blackbody an easy-to-integrate component in a large test
system.
In addition
to the advantages of the Smart Blackbody architecture, these advanced
systems are designed for ease of use, high uniformity, and maximum reliability.
SBIR's 4000 Series blackbodies are the ideal choice for high temperature
applications where high performance is a requirement.

Smart Blackbody®
Architecture
SBIRs Smart Blackbodies put the temperature measurement and calibration
electronics in the blackbody head rather than in the control electronics
package. With this new architecture, temperature measurement information
from the blackbody to the controller is serial digital data rather than
an analog temperature sensor signal. The result is significantly improved
performance: lower noise operation, more stable temperature control, improved
immunity to EMI, and an easier integration task for the test equipment
engineer.
High
Temperature Range
The emitting surface of the blackbody can be controlled at temperatures
up to 600°C.
High
Accuracy and Stability
The microprocessor-based temperature controller is designed for optimum
accuracy and stability. A high resolution enhanced PID temperature servo
provides zero drift and low jitter control of the emitting surfaces
temperature.
Ease
of Calibration
Calibration is fast and easy. Temperature corrections are made closed
case, without internal trims, adjustments, or reprogramming of EPROMs.
All adjustments can be made directly from the front panel or through the
remote interface. Calibration points are independent of each other, allowing
the user to touch up a single calibration point.
Built
In Test (BIT)
An extensive BIT assures that the blackbody is functioning properly during
use. BIT is automatically invoked on power up, and a continuous background
(transparent to the user) BIT is performed during operation. A more extensive
commanded BIT can be invoked via the computer interface.
Ease
of Integration
The 4000 Series blackbody sources are available in 2", 4", and
6" apertures. An intuitive, user-friendly front panel provides easy
control of all instrument functions. These blackbodies integrate easily
with other SBIR products such as collimators and target wheels.

IEEE
Std. 488 Interface (GPIB)
The thorough implementation of the ANSI/IEEE Std. 488.1-1987 allows computer
control of all blackbody functions, calibration, and optional features
such as target wheels and illuminators. (Option G)
RS-232
Serial Interface
An optional serial interface provides computer control of all blackbody,
calibration, illuminator and target wheel functions. (Option S)
Target
Wheels
Multiple apertures or targets can be rapidly and precisely positioned
in front of the blackbody. Aperture selection can be made from the front
panel of the controller or via the optional remote interface (IEEE 488
or RS-232). For details on the complete line of SBIR target wheels, see
the Target Wheel data sheet. (Option W)
Rack
Mounting
The blackbody controller is designed for bench-top or standard 19 inch
rack use. Rack mount ears are included with the instrument. A rack slide
kit is also available.
Handheld
Remote Panel
An optional remote control is available. All instrument front panel functions
can be accessed using this handheld unit. It is connected to the temperature
controller with a 10 foot cable (model 15148).

SBIR
4000 Series Blackbody systems are specified by Model number corresponding
to aperture size in inches (i.e., 4006 = 6"). Options are specified
as suffixes to the Model number (i.e., 4002GW = 2" blackbody with
IEEE 488 interface and Target Wheel Drive Electronics). Other features
such as non-standard cable length or rack slide kits should be specified.
