Santa Barbara Infrared’s new extended temperature blackbodies have a maximum absolute temperature of 175°C. The 2100 Series Blackbody System incorporates all the advantages of accuracy, stability, and ease of use as the 2000 Series Smart Blackbody®.

The Smart Blackbody puts the temperature measurement and calibration electronics, the brains of the system, in the blackbody head rather than in the control electronics package. With this new architecture, temperature measurement information from the blackbody to the controller is serial digital data rather than an analog temperature sensor signal. The result is lower noise operation, more stable temperature control, and improved immunity to EMI.

The blackbody is easier to integrate into your system. There are no limitations on cable length – accuracy and noise immunity are not affected. Blackbody calibration is independent of the controller – replacing the controller does not require recalibration of the blackbody.

In addition to the new temperature measurement architecture, other features contribute to the superior performance of these blackbodies. Improved temperature sensors, higher resolution temperature measurement electronics, and ultra-stable calibration place this new blackbody in a class by itself.

Improved System Architecture
The temperature measurement and analog-to-digital conversion circuitry, as well as the calibration tables, are located in the blackbody head. Temperature measurement information is sent to the blackbody controller in the form of a digital stream of data. This new architecture eliminates the system’s sensitivity to noise, enhancing blackbody stability and accuracy. The calibration of the blackbody head is independent of the controller, so heads and controllers can be swapped without recalibration.

High Accuracy and Stability
The microprocessor-based temperature controller is designed for optimum accuracy and stability. A high resolution enhanced PID temperature servo provides zero drift and low jitter setpoint control. Ultra-stable, high responsivity temperature sensors provide the resolution and long term accuracy needed to achieve this higher level of performance.

Versatile Control Functions
The Smart Blackbody features an intuitive multi-level front panel menu. The user can select any three parameters for simultaneous display. Temperature, target wheel position, illuminator and interface status are some of the parameters which can be displayed. Changes to these parameters can be made from the front panel, via computer interface, or handheld remote panel. The Smart Blackbody is optimized for seamless integration with IRWindows™, the new Windows-based FLIR test software from SBIR.

Ease of Calibration
Calibration is fast and easy. Temperature corrections are made “closed case”, without internal trims, adjustments, or reprogramming of EPROMs. All adjustments can be made directly from the front panel or by computer. Calibration points are independent of one another, allowing the user to touch up a single calibration point.

Built In Test (BIT)
An extensive BIT feature assures that the blackbody is functioning properly during use. BIT is automatically invoked on power up, and a continuous background BIT is performed during operation. A more extensive commanded BIT can be initiated via computer interface. BIT is transparent to the user, with status displayed on the front panel and also available through the remote interface.

Ease of Integration
Standard aperture sizes of the 2100 Series blackbody sources range from 2 to 8 inches square. Custom sizes and configurations are available to meet customer requirements. A user-friendly front panel provides easy access to all instrument functions. These blackbodies integrate easily into a turnkey IR target projection system incorporating SBIR’s Target Wheels, Visible Alignment Lights, and Collimators.

Handheld Remote Panel
An optional remote control is available. All instrument front panel functions can be accessed using this handheld unit. It is connected to the temperature controller with a 10 foot cable. (Model 15148).

IEEE Std. 488 Interface (GPIB)
The thorough implementation of the ANSI/IEEE Std. 488.1-1987 allows for computer control of all blackbody, calibration, illuminator, and target wheel functions. (Option G).

RS-232 Serial Interface
An optional serial interface provides computer control of all blackbody, calibration, illuminator and target wheel functions. (Option S).

Radiometric Differential Temperature
Differential temperature errors due to optical attenuation or emissivity differences can be corrected with this feature. (Option R).

Illuminator
A visible alignment light moves into and out of the optical path to backlight the target. The illuminator position is controlled from the front panel or via the computer interface. This feature is very useful for visible alignment of the system. IR-to-visible boresight tests can be made with uncompromised accuracy because the target is stationary during IR to visible transition. (Option I).

Targets
Many standard and custom infrared targets are available. These targets can be supplied with either emissive or reflective coatings. See the Target data sheet for details.

Target Wheels
Multiple targets can be rapidly and precisely positioned in front of the blackbody. Target position can be set from the front panel of the controller or via the optional computer interface. For details on the full line of target wheels see SBIR’s Target Wheel data sheet. (Option W).

Rack Mounting
The blackbody controller is designed for bench-top or standard 19 inch rack use. Rack mounting ears come standard with the instrument. A rack slide kit is also available.

SBIR 2100 Series Blackbody systems are specified by Model number corresponding to aperture size in inches (i.e. 2104 = 4"). Options are specified as suffixes to the Model number (i.e. 2102GW = 2" Blackbody with IEEE-488 Interface and Target Wheel Drive Electronics). If required, other features such as non-standard cable length, extended temperature range, and rack slide kits should be specified.
